Looking for that One Step Basement Floor Paint?
When wanting to paint the concrete in the basement, most of us are looking for the one step basement floor paint that does everything. Well, the good news is that there is such a thing as one step basement floor paint.
Epoxy paints are the right kind of paints to use, and so they work really well for the garage and a porch as well. They traditionally have been used in industrial circumstances but over the years are now also used by homeowners.
There are three types – 100 percent solids, solvent-based and water-based epoxies. For you as a homeowner you only need the water-based epoxies, as the others are for really hard surfaces and used in industrial circumstances. Water-based epoxies are fine for the basement, garage or porch or any type of concrete surface at the home.
The paint really can be called a one step paint, as you can apply it straight away and that's that. However, as with any painting, the amount of effort you put in will enhance the end result.
Choosing the right kind of epoxy paint
As mentioned above, water-based epoxies are your best bet but you don't have to go this route. If you really want something extra-strong then the other choices are there for you too. But, of course, they are more expensive.
Solvent-free epoxies emit less fumes and are quick to apply. This means they harden very fast and they are also more expensive.
As to colours, well there are plenty to choose from.
Preparing the floor
Now, the amount of effort you want to put in to this whole process depends on what you intend to use the basement for. If you just intend to keep storing your junk in there, then apply the epoxy paint one time and you're done. But if you intend to make it a room that is more well-used, you will need to just do a few basic things to get an even better result.
1)Clean the surface, which is probably what you would do anyway. The floor needs to be completely dry and there needs to be no dust, chemicals, oil or even dust on the floor before you apply the paint.
One of the best solutions for cleaning is a high pressured water spray. Of course, this works better for rooms that open to the outside, but if you can find a way to use it in the basement as well it's a great idea.
2)Fill any cracks in. Obviously, this depends on how smooth you want the surface to be, but the smoother the better.
3)Remember to wear a breathing mask for solvent epoxy paint. Epoxies are non-toxic when dry but when applying make sure you kit well. Gloves, rubber boots and goggles are all recommended.
4)In the actual painting process apply an even coat and brush the paint in using a small circular motion. Look out for brush marks and remember that more coats will obviously mean more durability. Also, don't rush when it comes to bringing any furniture in – give the paint some time after application.
Epoxy is the one step basement floor paint you need, but if you want an even better job then you will obviously need to put more effort in.
